Update:
We put together a first draft of this workshop’s schedule.
This workshops will concentrate on the current economic crisis, the impact it had on the countries of the Danube region and different measures that the countries have taken in the crisis management. As virtually all the countries of the Danube region were badly hit by the financial crisis, this is one of the most important aspects that need to be discussed in order to assess the impact it has on the future of the people from the region and also to critically examine the measures that were taken to improve the economic situation.
The cause of the East European financial crisis, including a good part of the countries from the Danube region, was a standard credit boom-and-bust cycle. East European countries attracted large international capital flows, owing to lose global monetary policy and accommodating business conditions. In the end, short-term bank lending became excessive and was used to finance a splurge on real-estate investment and consumption, while inflation took hold.
Three years after the effects of the economic crisis were first felt in this part of Europe, it is important that the progress in the crisis management is assessed and future recommendations are given for the economic development of the countries of the Danube region.
To write your paper, please answer one or two of the questions below:
1. In many respects, the Danube Region is a unified and united part of Europe. Can one claim that this is also the case in terms of the flow and consequences of the financial crisis? Could you distinguish several examples of different crisis management strategies that clearly show similarities and differences among the countries of the Danube Region?
2. A lot has been written and said about the causes, effects and progress of the financial crisis in different countries of the Danube Region. Offer an explanation on how the sense of belonging to the same community can help us avoid mistakes from the past. How can we implement the motto of YCDN “United in Diversity. Along the Danube. In Europe” in terms of coping with the financial crisis?
3. Imagine that you are the current Minister of Economy of a certain country of the Danube Region and that you want to raise the awareness of the young people about the importance of a stable market. How would you engage the youth in building the prosperity in the Danube Region? What would be your main arguments for explaining the importance of the youth’s involvement?
